Do you remember the old metal benches that once set on the triangle? There were 14 of them. They actually were there from approx. 1900 until 1957. They were removed when the ladies of Berea complained that the "dirty old men" who always sat on these benches whistled at them and made comments. The mayor ordered all the benches removed and said that if the benches were gone the men would be gone, too. So the benches were put into the city's storage facility where they were promptly stolen. A person who lives on Fair Street had one of these benches in his front yard. I recognized it as being one of the original triangle benches so I asked him if he would sell it to me. It was in terribly decrepit condition. He had no idea about its history. We agreed on a price and I bought it. I took it and had it sandblasted, then to the body shop where they re-welded broken parts, and spray painted it the original park bench green color. I polished up the bronze plaque that was on it. It was made by the Van Dorn Iron Works Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. We put it in our garden by the back door. It is beautiful and such a part of Berea history. The Historical Society authenticated it for me since they even had old close-up pictures of these benches. Gene Siodla

"The civil war cannon that resides on the Triangle in downtown Berea is in need of repair, so we have taken on the project of restoring the cannon to its original condition. 2nd Vice Commander Tony Mazzeo has found a place in Pennsylvania where we can get the wheels refurbished and Jim Jaworski of Berea is helping us get the cannon in good working condition. The Post has asked for donations from the Berea business community for help for this project, and we have had some favorable responses for the project. We hope to have it completed and back on the Triangle by Memorial Day 2007." Reprinted from - Post By The Lake Newsletter
